A Social Alchemist, A Loving Artist

They/He

I am from Memphis, TN. A place with a history that makes your heart shatter from grief, and yet a place that is the birthplace of so much art, music, culture, and power. My home is a place where my Black ancestors and the Indigenous stewards of the land were tortured, killed, displaced, and subjugated, and yet, it is a place where people fight to honor what has been taken away. I am the son of the beautiful, loving, and incomparable Carla, the Scorpio who first showed me what love could be like. I’m the brother of two growing young men who have taught me the power and necessity of patience and joy. I am the grandson of folks from rural spots throughout Mississippi and Tennessee. They all made their way to Memphis, and I was blessed to be able to grow up in a city that has taught me so much about what it means to express and create things that can inspire and change the world.

I’m a queer, Black artist hailing from Memphis, TN. I try to use the talents and gifts given to me and cultivated by me to fill the hearts of people in my community and orbit. I feel that the world can be too heavy, and I worry that kind-hearted people often think of themselves as too soft to do anything substantial to change it. All I want to do every day is spend time bringing people closer: to themselves, to their communities, and to the work that we all must do to tend to the gardens given to us by the universe. Having graduated from Regis University with a double major in Peace and Justice Studies and Philosophy and double minors in Community Food Systems and Women and Gender Studies, I know that in life, we are given calls from the universe that we must answer if we are to move the needle forward toward a timeline of love, justice, and joy. My work is to write, sing, play, dance, love, hold, cry, argue, yell, soothe, and care for me and my homies through the revolution.

As a queer storyteller, artist, and (aspiring) comms strategist, I was searching for a place like Soul 2 Soul Sisters for a very long time. I spent the first few years of my career in organizing spaces, working with youth-led organizations and other notable nonprofits to build power in the community. As someone trained in organizing from a youth voice perspective, I was deeply enamored with the power of narrative and story. I found that it often shaped how people would respond toward a policy or organizing effort. The longer I organized, the more I fell in love with understanding how to get people to move, not just in the voting booth but in that most potent soil for change: their hearts and their minds. As the Communications, Engagement, and Content Manager at Soul 2 Soul Sisters, I attempt to breathe life into my work by finding the soul of every project and helping people see it clearly and without confusion. I see my work as a portal into the world that is Soul 2 Soul Sisters, the work we do, and the reasons we do it.

If Black Beloveds were free, you’d likely see me on a world tour, singing my heart out or living in the South with my partner, our pets, knowing that we were truly safe.
